Estimate paint for a room
Measure the room’s length, width and wall height. For a rectangular room, wall area is 2 × (length + width) × height. Subtract the area of doors and windows you will not paint, then multiply by the number of coats. Divide by your paint’s coverage per US gallon to get a starting quantity.
For a 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls, gross wall area is 384 sq ft (about 35.7 m²). If openings cover 40 sq ft and you need two coats, at 350 sq ft per US gallon the estimate is (384 − 40) × 2 ÷ 350 = 1.97 US gal (about 7.45 liters). Enter your own coverage from the paint label.
